2010/2011 season review
Men:
A fantastic season culminating in no fewer than 5 promotions and Lancashire Cup champions!
After a few years of narrowly missing out on the top spot in North League Div 2, the 1's finally finished strongly to win the league and gain promotion back to North League Div 1. Hopes remain high that the team should be challenging at the top end again this season. The 1's also look forward to successfully defending the Lancashire Cup!
The 2's to 7's all compete in the North West Leagues and had numerous successes here aswell.
The 2's won Div 2 and got back up to where they were a two seasons ago.
After 2 successive promotions the 3's had a year of consolidation in Div 4, but should be looking to push for a top two finish this year.
The 4's had a fantastic season and were runners up in League 6, gaining promotion to Div 5.
Mid table finishes for the 5's, 6's and 7's in Divs 7, 9 and 10 eventually led to promotions for the 6's and 7's as the league was re-structured lower down!
So hockey at all levels.....and with success throughout. More of the same in 2011/12 please!
Ladies:
It was a good season for the ladies section in 2010/2011.
The ladies 1st team made club history by gaining their highest ever place, finishing 2nd in the North West feeder league, and narrowly missing promotion.
The ladies 2nds (who, following a history-making promotion the previous season, joined the 1st team in the North West feeder league) finished a respectable 9th out of 12. However, due to the unusual way the feeder league is structured this wasn’t enough to keep them from being relegated back into Greater Manchester Div 1, joining the ladies 3rd team. The 2nd team set yet another club record this season, by getting to the final of the National 2nd team trophy competition, played in Cannock; they lost 3-0 to Havant HC, but had a great day and got lovely National runners up medals....Well done girls!
The 3rd team maintain their place in GM Div 1, after finishing 7th so a solid foundation for next season.
The ladies 4th team made a late charge for promotion in division 2, but it was a case of too little too late, and they finished 3rd. In the ‘All Divs Plate’ however, the 4th team had success by beating Manchester University 5th on penalties in a very exciting final.
The 5th team gained their 2nd consecutive promotion by smashing division 3, winning the league 11 points clear. They now meet the 4th team next season in division 2.
Although finishing bottom of div 4, the 6th team had a very positive season, fielding a full squad week after week...... there aren’t many clubs that could say that! And the team spirit in the 6’s is second to none, with their team song ‘don’t stop believing’...
The summer league teams also did well with 3 Didsbury teams reaching the finals night. The Northerners Ladies team brought home some silverware, finishing as runners up of Division 4. Good job!
Roll on next season!
