First report of many by Darlo

After playing last week’s game that could be described as anything but a hockey match. We were hoping that this week we would be able to hit a hockey ball round rather than having do dodge flailing fists and sticks.
Looking through the team selection I was a bit worried that if the game did end up in a fight, we were missing the Scottish enforcer. However, after what can only be described an extremely demanding training session. The general mode was confident, and we felt well prepared especially with an expertly delivered warm up session.
The game started in a positively way with the lads obtaining great deal of control. You good feel the level of optimism rise when after about 5 minutes we realised that we had actual played more hockey than the whole of the 70 minutes the week before. There was some great interplay throughout the first half. Early on we managed to open up Preston with a precise cross field aerial that bypassed the Preston back line that we should have scored off. We should have realised that it was going to be one of those days. As this would be one of many well worked moves that somehow, we didn’t manage to convert.
The second half was met with even more frustration with us putting Preston under more pressure, the cracks started to appear. The chances grew and it was invertible that a goal was coming. This was delivered by one of the taller players on the pitch. It’s a good job it fell to him as there was no way a shorter player would have been able to reach the cross into the dee with shorter arms.
It’s hard to believe the fact with about 5 minutes to go we found ourselves 2-1, what was even harder to take was that Preston had only had about 3 shots in the whole game. This led to what could be best described as a siege on the opponent’s goal with balls hitting the post and flying inches wide. It also it become apparent that the Preston keeper that had got out of the right side of bed this morning.
With one final push, and the short corner count starting to hit double figures we had one more chance to salvage a point with a final short corner of the game. With the ball expertly dispatched to the back post from the top of the Dee it fell to Jonny Nichols touch it in. Inches away, we clearly needed a taller player hitting the back post the shouts of “Gaz Harper would have got there” could be heard.
The disappointment could be seen on faces for all the players having been on the end of a Preston smash and grab. It was a tough one to take with the side having played 4 and lost 4 and probably should have won all 4. We have clearly been unlucky with the start to the season which can’t last for much longer. One thing is for sure though is that class is permeant luck is temporary and I have no doubt that this team is just about ready to go on a winning run. See you all at training on Tuesday
